AP Report: Week 14

by @ 12:00 pm. Filed under All Cats Everything

Soooo… Miami Florida is ranked number 8 in Men’s Basketball? Maybe my relatively few years on this Earth has limited my perspective of the basketball history of Miami but I feel like we’d have to dig a ways back to find when Miami was last ranked this high in the polls. The Hurricanes commonly find themselves on the bubble at the end of the season after flirting with the top 25 throughout the year but it seems that after Miami beat NC State they are not only a lock, but a potential 2 seed. Wow. Oregon really crumbled under the fame with 2 losses this week dropping the Ducks to #18 while Kansas State continues to climb the polls hitting #13 this week after a perch at 18 in the previous poll.

After their amazing upset over Kansas, the Travis Ford led Oklahoma State Cowboys say hello to the top 25 as they found their way to #22. Last but not least, UK is back in the other receiving votes and sits at 34th.

5 Kansas 19-2 1,350
6 Gonzaga 21-2 1,249
7 Arizona 19-2 1,248
8 Miami (FL) 17-3 1,132
9 Syracuse 18-3 1,091
10 Ohio State 17-4 1,033
11 Louisville 18-4 1,018
12 Michigan State 18-4 994
13 Kansas State 17-4 782
14 Butler 18-4 774
15 New Mexico 19-3 660
16 Creighton 20-3 578
17 Cincinnati 18-4 552
18 Minnesota 17-5 454
19 Oregon 18-4 390
20 Georgetown 16-4 364
21 Missouri 16-5 245
22 Oklahoma State 15-5 235
23 Pittsburgh 18-5 207
24 Marquette 15-5 137
25 Notre Dame 18-4 132

Conference Power Rankings:

1) Big Ten – 5 Teams Ranked – Average Ranking of 8.8

2) Big East – 7  Teams Ranked – Average Ranking of 18.43

3) Big 12 – 3 Teams Ranked – Average Ranking of 13.33

4) ACC – 2 Teams Ranked – Average Ranking of 6

5) SEC – 2 Teams Ranked – Average Ranking of 11.5

6) PAC 12 – 2 Teams Ranked – Average Ranking of 13

I overrode the numerical values to put the Big Ten over the Big East in the rankings because the Big East occupied the last three spots in the top 25. That’s just wrong. The Big Ten has better quality basketball this year and they shall remain atop the power rankings. Bad week for the SEC with Mississippi dropping 2 and Missouri dropping one but that’s fine because our Cats are in a tie for 2nd place in the SEC as a result. This season has obviously been a tumultuous one not just for Kentucky but for the whole NCAA. All I can say is these brackets are going to be tough to fill out come March.

Prediction for tonight: Kentucky 82 South Carolina 68

I like that score prediction and hope it’s right. I’m gonna predict that Alex Poythress is the top scorer. I have absolutely nothing to base that prediction on except that maybe it’s his turn.

  2. John Burke Says:

Well I guess my prediction wasn’t too far off! Poythress looked out of sorts tonight I thought. Mays with top scorer distinction two games in a row!
