John Madden is Ready for Some Football

by @ 7:20 pm. Filed under All Cats Everything, Football

BOOM!!

Today’s football notes are dedicated to none other, than John Madden.  On this day in 1969, Madden was introduced as the Head Coach of the Oakland Raiders and became one of the most recognizable figures in the history of American Football.  Madden is not only the face of one the most successful sports games ever, he was also one of the greatest coaches in NFL history.  Hired at the age of 32, he was the youngest Head Coach in the league.  From there, Madden became a Super Bowl winning coach and holds the second highest winning percentage in NFL history.  Madden has made football his life since his playing days back in the 50′s and the game as a whole is better for it.  It would be hard to imagine the NFL without John Madden.

SIGNING DAY IS CLOSE, LIKE REALLY CLOSE.

It’s not a secret anymore that the direction of Kentucky Football is starting to change for the better.  It seems like the perfect scenario: Improved facilities, new coaching staff, new offense, etc.  It’s the new recruiting class however, that seems to gathering most of the chatter throughout the sports world, and rightfully so.  I’ve followed Kentucky pretty closely for a long time, but never have I heard so much buzz about a FOOTBALL recruiting class.  It’s crazy, but #BBN is actually starting to paying attention to Football again.  And I think that the recruits are noticing it.  It doesn’t seem logical to only use the Kentucky effect in basketball recruiting; the top talent in the country want to play somewhere they will be recognized and appreciated.  I’m going to say it now: the University of Kentucky will always be a basketball first school, but I think the days of “wait til basketball season” are coming to an end.  There has to be a nail in the coffin; something to solidify the changing of the status quo.  I can’t help but think that in order to finalize the stellar off-season Stoops and company have produced, they need to sign one of the Kentucky boys: Jason Hatcher or Ryan Timmons.  In a place like Kentucky, every team needs a Darius Miller.  People need a hometown hero to really get behind things.  We’ll see what happens.

Just for fun, I wanna start the discussion…

Here’s the question: If you were going to build a football team out of current/former Kentucky basketball players, who would make the team?

I had some free time today and decided once and for all that I was going to pick my team.  Shout out to @amjohnn and @ChrisClarkson91 for their consultant work on this list, as it was no easy task.

OFFENSE:

QB: JOHN PELFREY

HB: ERIC BLEDSOE

Not up for discussion.  Period.

TE: PATRICK PATTERSON

WR: JOHN WALL

WR: RON MERCER

JUST THE SKILL POSITIONS FOR RIGHT NOW.  I THINK BASKETBALL PLAYERS JUST DON’T HAVE THE O-LINE MINDSET.

DEFENSE:

DT: NAZI MUHAMMAD

DT: DEMARCUS COUSINS.  (HE WILL NOT BE HAPPY ABOUT PLAYING ON THE LINE.)

DE: TERRENCE JONES

DE: CHUCK HAYES

OLB: JODIE MEEKS

MLB: KELENA AZUBUIKE

OLB: DEANDRE LIGGINS

CB: RAVI MOSS

CB: RAMEL BRADLEY

SS: MICHAEL KIDD-GILCHRIST

FS; SEAN WOODS

Comments and critique are welcomed and appreciated.

Again, happy signings everyone.  #BBN get excited, it could be the start of better days in Commonwealth Stadium.  Until next time…

You’re probably way too young to remember Charles Hurt and James Lee. Think Kelenna Azibuke like physique. They looked like line backers to me. Seems that WCS would need to be a WR. And Sam Bowie would be good as well. And if I wanted someone to just bust heads and make bodies fly into the air I wpuld choose Jason Parker.

Kids from the video age don’t even know that Madden was anything but the name of a game – he was one heck of a coach!

I’m thinking a little more old school on my football team – definitely Jack Givens at running back and Mel Turpin could play either D or O line, probably both. Also like Kyle Macy/Kevin Grevy for QB (no offense to Pelfry) James Lee for middle LB, Rick Robey at DE or OL, Mike Phillips at DE or OL, Charles Hurt, ANYWERE; Dan Issel, nose guard, Roderick Rhodes at WR and Winston Bennett at safety. Good post!

If you remember, Ravi Moss actually walked on to the football team to play corner.
