Kentucky, at 8-4 in the conference, is currently tied for third in the SEC with Ole Miss. Because UK beat Ole Miss, in what seems like months ago, the Cats would get the #3 seed if the tournament started today. Coach Cal’s team would take on the winner of Arkansas v. Vandy/South Carolina winner. As Florida knows, Arkansas is not a team to overlook, and Kentucky cannot afford to count anyone out at this point in the season. If UK was to beat the Razorbacks, they would most likely take on the two-seed of Alabama in the semifinals. The top four teams in the tournament get to play either one or two games less than the others, and the bottom four teams have to play at least one more game than everyone else.
If the tournament started today, Kentucky would avoid Missouri, Ole Miss, and Florida until the championship game if they were to advance that far. I know there’s still games to be played, and that this most likely not be what the bracket will look like in a few weeks, but if UK can just stay in the top four, their chances of winning the tournament skyrocket. Just making it to the championship game would be huge for the Cats’ resume this late in the season.
