Cats Top Xavier, 6-3.

by @ 7:19 pm. Filed under Baseball

After and unexpected day off yesterday, the Cats returned to a cold and snowy Cliff Hagan Stadium to take on the Xavier Musketeers.  Xavier hung tough for the entire game, spoiled numerous threats by the Cats to break it open, and even took the lead in the fourth, but UK was able to scrape together enough runs late to earn their eleventh win of the season.

Game Notes

J.T. Riddle put the Cats on the board in the opening frame, scoring Zac Zellers on a sac fly.  UK would be held scoreless over the next three innings before first baseman Max Kuhn scored two with a two out double in the fifth to give the Cats a 3-2 lead.

Freshman Kyle Cody pitched well in the second start of his young career as he worked five complete innings, giving up two earned runs on four hits and struck out three.  Cody rolled through the first three innings, retiring nine straight after giving up a single to the first batter of the game.  A leadoff single followed by back to back doubles in the fourth scored two  Musketeer runs, but Kuhn’s double in the next inning got Cody off the hook and earned him his first victory.

A.J. Reed’s hot streak continued as he crushed his fifth home run of the season with a solo shot in the seventh.  Reed was 2-for-3 on the day with two walks and scored twice.  Paul McConkey scored on a wild pitch and a Zac Zellers drove in Lucas Witt on a sac fly for two late insurance runs.

The Cats used a trio of relievers over the final four innings to close out the Musketeers.  Walter Wijas, Chandler Shepherd, and Trevor Gott combined to allow one run on four hits with Gott picked up his second save of the season.

Like most of Central Kentucky, Cliff Hagan Stadium was covered in snow this morning. Fortunately for the Cats, All-American lefthanders are All-American snow shovelers too.

The Cats will welcome Michigan State to Cliff Hagan Stadium for a three game series this weekend with first pitch scheduled for 4pm on Friday.
