Alabama and Vandy were the only teams in the SEC to lose on the first two days of the 2012 baseball season. The Crimson Tide lost twice to Florida Atlantic and #12 Vandy appears to be on the verge of being swept by #3 Stanford. The Commodores currently trail in the 6th inning by a score of 9-4, but a tough weekend with the #3 team in the country is nothing for Vanderbilt to be overly concerned about in what is nearly a 60-game collegiate baseball schedule.
Billy Gillispie #2 South Carolina had a few close calls with VMI this weekend, holding on to win 2-1 and 3-2, before a 13-1 win to sweep the series. Marquee wins for the league include #1 Florida taking 2 out of 3 this weekend from #16 Cal State Fullerton. The Gators dropped the third game of the series today; however, by a score of 8-5. Taking 2 out of 3 from the 16th ranked team in the country should be viewed as a successful weekend for the Gators, but it will be interesting to see whether or not the 3-0 Gamecocks take over the top spot in the polls this week. Either way, the SEC should still have the two top spots. In other current action, Auburn is leading Missouri 3-1 in their attempt to sweep a future SEC foe.
Future UK non-conference opponents had mixed results this weekend.
#15 Louisville dropped their season opener on Friday, falling to Minnesota by a score of 7-1. #L1C4
Xavier, another future UK opponent, knocked off #4 North Carolina in the second game of a double-header on Friday by a score of 10-4. Xavier dropped the other two games of the series in Chapel Hill, but claiming a win over the 4th ranked Tar Heels was impressive nonetheless. When the Cats host Xavier in 10 days in Lexington, I’ll be covering the game from a very unique perspective. As a graduate student at Xavier, I actually covered the Xavier baseball team last season for the Xavier Newswire student newspaper. With a background of having covered both teams, it’ll be an interesting game for me to write about. The Musketeers could prove to be a tough mid-week opponent for the Cats.
It was of course a great start for the Cats this weekend. Not only did they win, but they won in a very impressive manner and in a complete team effort, with great pitching and great hitting. Wofford and Eastern Michigan aren’t exactly SEC caliber teams, but to win as soundly as they have is a positive way to start the season. USC Upstate, who is also 2-0 and also has put up double-digit runs in each of their games, could be a bigger challenge for the Cats tomorrow.

It is still freezing in Minnesota, and it’s baseball season – and Minnesota beat Louisville!? Awesome.
….SEC baseball is really underrated in Lexington. Hopefully these good posts kickstart a new love affair with America’s past time. We need something to care about in the summer time anyway.

haha, yeah Minnesota hasn’t even been able to practice outdoors all winter and still beat Louisville in their opener. In their defense, I think Minnesota actually plays their games at the Metrodome, so maybe they are able to use it to practice in the preseason as well. I assume they probably do. The Vikings would have no use for it this time of year and the Twins don’t play there anymore.
