Matthew Mitchell Doesn’t Care about Your Home Win Streak

The UGA Lady Bulldogs once had a home winning streak. In fact, Georgia had put together a quite impressive string of wins within the friendly confines of Stegeman Coliseum that dated back to February of last year. Someone forgot to inform Matthew Mitchell, however, that 15th ranked Georgia isn’t supposed to lose at home before he dougied in for UK Hoops’ huge showdown in Athens. Using a balanced attack and general awesomeness, the Cats were able to mount a comeback and maintain their unbeaten record in SEC play, 69-64.

The biggest story of the night for the Lady Cats was the play of Samarie Walker, a transfer from mighty UConn, who had her first real breakout game since she joined the team on the court last month after sitting out the team’s first several games. Walker racked up 18 points and 9 rebounds on 8-10 shooting, while recording only 20 minutes of play. Big Blue Nation has waited for a performance like this from Walker, who certainly lived up to the hype against the Bulldogs in a game where UK could not depend solely on junior A’dia Mathies, who scored a modest 7 points two games after her career-high 34-point performance against the Fighting Pat Summits.

Other Notes from the Big UK Victory:

Bria Goss also had what was probably her best performance of the season, knocking down three of Kentucky’s six shots from downtown and dropping a game-high 22 points.

Kentucky outscored UGA 34-0 in bench points. This is one of the deepest teams I have ever seen, all genders aside.

UK managed to win despite forcing Georgia into only 14 turnovers, while committing 16 of their own. And yes, 14 is a very low number for this Wildcat defense. It’s nice to see that the Cats can win even if the defense is unable to record a school record in turnovers every game.

A’dia Mathies still led the team when it mattered most, driving in the lane for a layup that sealed the win at the end of the game. If you’ve yet to make the trip to Memorial to see her play in person, you’re missing out. She’s a special player.

UK Hoops will take on Florida at 2 pm Sunday at Memorial Coliseum. Come out and support. Let’s get that SEC title.

Go Cats.

Great post! I just hope Pat Summit is able to stay in Knoxville for a while because I think Coach Mitchell would be a top candidate to replace her.

I still can’t believe the bench stat. 34-0 wow, that’s awesome. Good post
