As they have been able to do when playing ranked opponents this season, the Cats kept it close with the 11th ranked, 28-0, Cardinals, but couldn’t get over the hump as they lost by a score of 1-0 last night. In a pitching showdown, the Cats’ duo of Chanda Bell and Rachel Riley were excellent, however, Cardinals’ pitcher Tori Collins (13-0) was a little better. Both defenses played great, Louisville’s unfortunately was just a tad greater. This 1 run game for the Cardinals is their lowest output all season so that’s something for the Cats to hang their hats on.
The lone score of the game came in the top of the fourth inning when Louisville right fielder Kristin Austin homered to left field. If it wasn’t for that one strike this one wold have been an extra inning showdown. Bell and Riley teamed up to hold the Cards scoreless for the rest of the game but, credit the Cards, the Wildcat offense was non-existent. UK came oh so close to scoring in the bottom of the 7th as they got runners on first and third. The runners were stranded there, however, as Louisville worked out of the inning to end the game.
Pitching: Chanda Bell will be charged with the loss, moving her to 8-6 on the season. She and Riley combined to strike out 8 Louisville batters with Bell dropping 7 herself.
Hitting: The Cats held the Cards to just 6 hits but the Cards held the Cats to a dismal 3 hits. Kara Dill, Brittany Cervantes and Lauren Cumbess had a hit a piece. Cervantes doubled.
Errors: Louisville: 1…….Kentucky: 0
Attendance was at a solid number of 1001 with the game lasting a duration of 1 hour and 40 minutes. Weather was in the mid 60s.
I hate losing to Louisville just as much as the next guy but I’ll give the Cards this game if the Cats can take Saturday’s Basketball game. The Softball team moves on to the next rival this weekend as they will pay a visit to the unfriendly confines of Knoxville, Tennessee where the 9th ranked Lady Vols await the Cats. The three-game showdown will begin tomorrow night at 6 P.M. ET.
