Luis Orta kicked off the weekend’s action at the Mt. SAC Relays in California. His teammates have carried his strong performance into their first day of competition at IU. The Polytan Invitational includes elite schools such as Notre Dame, IU (naturally), Iowa State, and of course UK.
The highlight of the day lies in the 400 meter hurdles as Brandon Bagley and Devinn Cartwright each laid down career bests in the event. Bagley recorded a 53.93, bettering his previous best time of 54.65 en route to a third place finish. Cartwright, a Freshman from the Bahamas, ran a 1:02.46, bettering her previous best time of 1:04.94 en route to fourth place. Each of these career bests are by huge margins. Dropping 1 or 2 seconds in such a short event is monumental. Congrats to those two athletes on fine performances!
The Lady Cat’s 4×100 squad notched a first place finish in the event, missing their season best by .34 seconds. Keilah Tyson, Tamyah Pipkin, Julie Nunn, and Kayla Parker make up the relay team.
Terrence Boyd finished second in the Triple Jump. He spanned 14.28m.
The 1500 meter squad showed up in style. Allison Peare continues to add on to her stellar season with a 4:27.07 time. This is a career best for the Sophomore and was good for seventh place. Junior Katy Achtien had a career best time of 4:43.08 in the event to add to the day’s long list of Personal Records. For the guys, Adam Kahleifeh and Walter Lutrell each had career bests with seventh and ninth place finishes of 3:50.14 and 3:51.98 respectively.
Andrew Evans notched a 53.45 meter hurl in the hammer throw, giving him a sixth place finish on the day.
