In my next player profile for the UK Baseball team, I chose to write about Thomas McCarthy. He is a vetern on this team as a senior, and helps to add the perfect combination of youth and experience the Wildcats boast. Just a few days ago, McCarthy was nominated for the Lowes Senior Class Award, which congratulates seniors in all Division 1 collegiate sports for their work on and off the field. You can vote for McCarthy here.
McCarthy plays 3rd base for the Wildcats, and has received many accolades throughout his career. He was named to the preseason All-SEC team prior to this year. McCarthy originally hails from Corvallis, Oregon….aka the complete opposite end of the country. He wanted to go to the SEC, obviously since it’s the best conference in the nation, and to get more possible attention from MLB scouts. I’d say he made the right decision.
McCarthy has a 3.4 GPA, and is a psychology major, one I know is a very tough one at UK. To see him be so successful in the classroom and on the baseball diamond is setting a great example for student-athletes all over campus.
Last season McCarthy was Kentucky’s first 1st team All-SEC 3rd baseman since 1972. During the past couple of seasons as the Wildcats have had immense struggles, McCarthy has been one of the few mainstays for the program. He’s been a leader and an all-star since day one, and it’s nice to see a guy who’s been through the lowest of the lows with this team finally get some pay-off this season and other stellar players around him, especially since he’s so far from home.
McCarthy also has a connection to UK which might have played a part in him coming here in the first place. In high school he played baseball with UK Head Coach Gary Henderson’s oldest son, Alex, when the Henderson’s used to live in Corvallis. What a small world…
