You want a BIG NAME Football Coach?

by @ 2:00 pm. Filed under Football

Yea, I'd buy a blue sweater vest.

Now that I’m on my summer job grind, I’ve become a daily KSR listener. A topic this week that continually came up was our football program’s struggles. They blame recruiting, they blame facilities, and to top it off they blame the coaching. Most people’s solution to the problem is to hire a BIG NAME guy to get some excitement around the program. Matt says that it will never happen, but I’m here to tell you that IT CAN.

Yea, I never liked Jim Tressel, he Coached Ohio State. I spent countless hours in high school arguing with my strength coach about SEC vs. Big 10 Football. One of my friends was even bold enough to tell him that UK was technically better than OSU because we beat LSU and they lost to them in the BCS National Championship. It was the day after the game; we were heartless.

While we can despise him for coaching at OSU, we can’t not appreciate the fact that he is a National Championship Head Football Coach. He did commit some malfeasance last year, it’s not like he pulled a Petrino on the back of a motorcycle. As time passes, I’m sure that Kentucky fans would be very forgiving if they finally got their BIG NAME.

I also believe that UK is the perfect place for Tressel to rebuild his career and program after he serves his 5-year NCAA show-cause penalty. He has all of his recruiting connections just a few hours North on I-75, and we are in the SEC. He would not bring an Air Raid that fans would drool over, but he would bring consistency to the most inconsistent program in the SEC (yea, Vandy has the upper hand on us right now). It would take 2 or 3 years-ish to build some talent, but I believe Tressel could bring Kentucky football to an SEC Championship game, and at worst a 6 or 7 win season. Oh man that just sounds like a dream.

The timing may be poor, but I believe that it can happen. While UK would never hire him while under his 5 year penalty (we’ve dealt with enough football probation) it could be just about the right timing to get a new coach. People that don’t like Joker and want him gone this year after a poor season, I’m sorry but I don’t think you’ll get it. I believe in Joker and this year’s team. I think that Joker can put together a nice little 3 or 4 year run behind Patrick Towles, but after that I believe it could be Tressel time (anyone remember Tubby Time?).

You don’t like what I got to say? Then don’t follow @RoushKSR

I would have considered Mike Leach a more realistic candidate, before he was hired at Washington state??? But, I think Jim Tressel has too much baggage with him to bring him to Kentucky. I believe KY needs to start with updating all of their facilities and show their fan base that they are serious about winning in football. If you build it the kids will come. There’s no reason why Kentucky can’t be just like SC and be a consistent top 25 team football. Look what Arkansas was before they got petrino!
