This weekend the best high school seniors from Kentucky and Indiana face off in their annual showdown. As a kid nothing seemed like a greater honor then being a Kentucky All-Star. It still means you’re one of the best, but the game has lost its luster in recent years, due to the fact that the Bluegrass Boys have lost 24 of the last 27. That hurts but you can’t hate, Indiana simply has more talented basketball players than KY.
This year Indiana has a more powerful team then usual, with all 13 players on the roster signed to D-1 schools. Michigan State commit Gary Harris is the stud of the group that has 3 future Hoosiers . On the other hand, Kentucky’s 3 best schools are Boston U, Morehead, Marshall, and the D-II University of Evansville. Most IN guys will be Big 10 household names, whereas in Kentucky this may be the only time you’ll ever hear these guys names. They’re so bad that even the girls’ team makes fun of them.
Hell Mr. Basketball Nathan Dieudonne was a scrub 2 years ago. He got the pleasure to lean on me and wear me out for an entire game, but didn’t know what to do with the ball when he got it. I never thought he would amount to anything other than “that big goon from Trinity” (you’d think that Catholic School ballers would stick together, but nothing is worse than losing to another one). Props to Nathan (I don’t want to spell his last name anymore) for stepping up and helping his team win their 1st state, but I never in a million gazillion years thought he’d be the state’s best baller.
However I will be paying much more attention to the girls game because the Roushes will be in full force. My sisters are apart of a team that will actually have a chance to win. The girls team is highlighted by Miss Basketball Sydney Moss, daughter of Randy Moss and a Florida commit. She has one of the most versatile styles of play I’ve ever seen, with the ability to take the ball up the court, knock down threes, and postup and rebound like the biggest person on the court. She’s the type of player that makes watching women’s basketball enjoyable.
Kentucky’s girls also have one thing that I’m sure Indiana doesn’t: solid team chemistry. They are coached by Sweet 16 Champion Manual’s Stacy Pendleton, and feature 4 different girls from that team. Those that didn’t play together in high school, have all played with or against each other at some point and are close with one another. “We don’t care who gets it done on the team, as long as Kentucky gets the job done.” They will need a good team effort in order to take down a bigger Indiana team. They can get the job done, and are our best chances of having a victory this weekend.
