From now until the beginning of UK’s football season (September 2 at Louisville), KSRcollege will be counting down the days before we finally see the pigskin again. Each day, We’re going to take the number of days left before the season starts, and explain how that number is significant to UK football history (recent or ancient). This is going to be based on both personal memories and the research we compile. Hopefully, this will keep us and the football fans occupied during the long summer months and the non-football fans interested. So, until September 2…
- The Oklahoma Sooners entered the 1951 Sugar Bowl with a 31 game win streak that was abruptly ended by Bear Bryant’s Kentucky Wildcats. The 13-7 victory earned the Cats the honor of Co-National Champions according to the Sagarin ratings. UK finished the regular season 10-1 winning the SEC Championship, only losing to Cotton Bowl Champions Tennessee. Oklahoma’s win streak remains the 7th longest in NCAA History.
- Safety Mikie Benton will wear #31 for the Cats this year. Benton has developed well and shows maturity as a Redshirt Senior. He had a great Spring and was labeled as a leader in the secondary by Coach Joker Phillips.
- The 1931 Wildcats went 5-2-2. You think that record could get Joker another contract?
