Know Thy Enemy: Kent State.

by @ 10:00 pm. Filed under All Cats Everything

Kentucky kicks off the home schedule this Saturday against the Golden Flashes of Kent State. Little is known about the team from the MAC and the great warlord Sun Tzu once wrote:

It is said that if you know your enemies and know yourself, you will not be imperiled in a hundred battles”

It’s time to get educated on the Golden Flashes. Here’s this weeks edition of Know thy Enemy:

Where is Kent St. located?

Kent State is surprisingly located in Kent, Ohio. Just an hour away from the mistake by the lake known as Cleveland.

What’s a Golden Flash?

Based on a quick look at the logo it would appear to be another bird with teeth. However, there is no bird known as the flash. Perhaps their nick name is a nod to Jay Garrick, the first superhero to be known as “The Flash” from the Golden age of comic books. The Golden Age Flashes doesn’t make for a very good nickname though. Another look at the logo and the answer strikes, lighting my lad, of course! From wikipedia:

The nickname “Golden Flashed” became synonymous with Kent St shortly after a 49-7 football road victory over the Dayton Demons on April 1, 1909. Commandant Antonio I. Kornheiser, then head of the photography department at old Kent University, told a group of students  following the game that the team had “struck like lightening. A real bunch of old-timey Golden Flashes if you will” Later the name Golden Flashes became more and more popular among the townsfolk. As a result, the nickname was adopted by the University

How’d the last meeting turn out?

Well most recently Kent State was the team that Kentucky baseball could not survive as they attempted to #SurviveGary. The two teams kicked off the tournament with a 21 inning classic that saw the Wildcats fall. The two squared off again to advance to the super regional but the Cats again came up short.

The two football teams last met in 2007. The game was a tune-up before Stevie got loose and Kentucky rolled the flashes 56-20. For Saturday expect a much closer game as the Cats are only favored by 7.

7 points!? How good is Kent St?

Who knows? Last year the Golden Flashes went 5-6 with a few embarrassing losses. This year they started off the season with a win. But that win was over FCS member Towson and their group of tigers. During the game this happened

This video was posted on KSRc earlier this week but its so awesome it deserves the re-post. Seriously what was that guy thinking?
