Lexington: It’s a city that has it all. Trust me, I know. I’ve lived here all my 18+ years of life and experienced pretty much all it has to offer. I was skeptical coming to UK for college, worried that the city of Lexington would get real old, real quick. Luckily, this wasn’t the case. Living on campus is a completely different world. The majority of the time here, I honestly forget that I’m in the same city I’ve been in my whole life.
Thinking back, I wonder what is it about the “campus part” of Lexington that’s so exciting and different from the “suburban” part of Lexington, and I think I’ve finally put my finger on it. Around the regular city of Lexington, everyone is different, just like any other city. Democrats vs Republicans, old people vs young people, wangsters vs nerds. Campus isn’t like this. Yes, everyone on campus is different, I meet a different type of person every day, but around campus, we’re all connected in some way. We’re all proud citizens of Big Blue Nation. Whether you’re a Greek (Go Beta), or a GDI, you have a 4.0 or a 1.2 (get a tutor), we all have this common denominator to be proud of.
No matter where you go on campus, you know the people around you all brow down to Anthony Davis, know the Wildcat Wobble, and enjoy casually throwing up the 3 goggles at a denim themed date party (see picture above with yours truly front and center). This, is a great feeling. I’m just saying, it would suck being on a campus with losing athletic programs.
Yeah, it probably makes me sound superficial for enjoying a college mainly because of the sports teams, but believe it or not it makes a huge difference. After a big win, campus is absolutely electric. You can just tell everyone’s on another level of happiness (everyone minus those few dumbos who hate UK sports yet still go here….um, leave). I can only imagine what it will be like during March Madness…but I’m not going to provide a prediction of how far we’ll make it, I tend to jinx things.
Anyway, point of the story, is I love UK. It probably means nothing to anyone reading this because I mean, who really cares what an 18-year-old college freshman has to say?…however, my name is Wilder, that has to give me some credentials. UK oftentimes gets a bad rap by local high schoolers around town because people think it’s “the easy way out” and “you aren’t experiencing the world”. Honestly, this viewpoint is pretty narrow-minded in itself if you ask me.
That’s my spiel, take it how you want to, but at the end of the day all I know/care about is that I am a proud member of BBN, and we da we da best.

Thanks for calling all non-greeks GDIs– I consider this a derogatory term. Stick to sports.

YESSSSSSSS!!!

Yeah…keep the Greek stuff out of this…everyone has the right to do whatever they want on campus, but this doesn’t belong on a sports blog. Go Cats!

I think I recognize a couple of those denim-clad folks!

GDI is not meant as a “derogatory” term…I just think it’s a better term to use than “non-Greek”. It was a point trying to show the different people at UK…that’s all.

Seems like the point was every student was part of the #bbn as a GDI its not derogatory but a choice. The post was about sports and being a fan but as usual people can find anything to offended by. Sheesh. Keep on keeping on bloggers, personal stories and opinions make for a vibrant community!

@Wilder:: Not a derogatory term? What exactly do you think GDI stands for?
February 5th, 2012 at 10:29 pm
I know what it stands for, and I know many “non-Greeks” at UK who call themselves GDIs…therefore if they don’t think it’s derogatory and they’re talking about themself, that’s not how I view the term.

People calm down. His point is BBN has all kinds of different people in it. Stop trying to find something to be offended about. Nice article @Wilder, keep on writing

I think the teem was coined to put down the Greek system, not as a putdown to independents…but again, this had little do do with this post. More to the point, Lexington is definitely more fun when the Bball Cats are winning! Just wait til March.

Killer article, Tilder! Keep it up man!

hahah GDI was made up by unaffiliated (you think that sounds nicer?) students to make fun of the greek system. if theyre gunna use “GD” to describe their “I” and not just call themselves Iotas or whatever, it would appear they were happy about it…
anyway, loved the post Wilder! I know exactly what you mean when you talk about the energy coming off a win! love it!!!
