Not a picture from today, I just really enjoy this one for some reason….
John Calipari, Anthony Davis, and Terrence Jones took time out of their busy schedules of being Big Blue celebrities to talk to the media today. Here are some of the main points they spoke about as UK gets ready for arguably their hardest week of the year so far, Florida at home tomorrow and Vandy on the road Saturday.
-All Cal cares about at this point, is preperation for March. He said tipoff times, Thursday-Saturday tandem games, and other issues “don’t matter to me”. Way to take the high road coach, cause those issues sure do matter to others….ahem, Kevin Stallings, ahem.
-Cal also noted that in college basketball, oftentimes teams peak too early. To combat this he said he “paces his coaching” and says sometimes teams “can’t sustain this”. Mentions that UK needs to needs to stick with what they’ve done the past two weeks.
-Florida is a team known for the their 3 point shooting, so much so that they lead the NCAA in that statistic. Cal said “You can stop layups. They’re going to get (3s). You just want to make sure they’re guarded”. When asked what would happen if Florida makes 20 3′s: “we’ve had a heck of a start”.
-Cal also put a lot of emphasis on swagger not leading to arrogance: “What happened in the last 2 weeks? Why have we changed? Let’s not get away from that.”
-Speaking of swagger….Jerry Tipton asked Terrence Jones to define the term in relation to how Florida’s leading scorer Bradley Beal had a lot of it…“Confidence in your own way, and believing in yourself….We’ve got a lot of it, too”. I don’t think I’m the only one that chuckles a little picturing this question being asked…and I’m sure KSRCollege’s own Ally Tucker is shuddering just thinking about it.
-Anthony Davis and Michael Kidd-Gilchrist have both been named to the Oscar-Robinson mid-season watch list, featuring a total of 20 players. This is an award for the Player of the Year in college basketball. When asked about the award Cal said the best thing was: “not talking about kids shooting 25 times a game. They’re finally getting their due“.
-When asked about how much video is watched before a game on the upcoming opponent Terrence Jones said 5 minutes is enough, and that any more might induce sleep. TJ does look awfully sleepy when I see him sauntering around campus, get that kid some 5-Hour Energy!
-Davis said he doesn’t mind getting barbed on the road by fans about his unibrow. He said he’s used to it from his own teammates, and actually likes it. What a man…
-Jones said that living and dying by the 3, as Florida does is “an OK way to play.” Cal also noted the importance of long rebounds against Florida from the 3s and how guards on the elbows need to especially step up.
Florida is now ranked 7th in the AP Poll (tied with the Racers of Murray State), so make sure to tune in to the top 10 showdown in Rupp tomorrow night at 7.
